Southall Turns Up The Oklahoma Twang In New Single "Scared Money"
If money was no object would you still be stuck in the same ole job you are in? Well Oklahoma natives Southall want to share their POV on the matter.
Today the six piece Southall puts their money where their mouth is with the twangy new track Scared Money. The groovy track serves a time machine right back to 1970s southern rock with a promenade retro Okie influence.
"Scared Money is the confrontation with the mindset that money is king," band member Reid Barber told All Country News. "That's what we are thinking about when we are making our decisions. I like money but I don't want it to be affect all my decision making. I could have gone a different direction is I wanted to make more money. I'm not in it just for the money, none of us are," he continued.
Southall is one of a few country bands that have started to explore more introspective everyday issues, allowing fans to connect on a deeper level beyond just beers and trucks. Plus the clever production makes listeners feel like they are jamming in the garage right along with the band.
"We felt a lot more comfortable going a little more country on this record," Reid laughs. "We kind of had this identity issue on the last record. In the past each band member would go into the studio and track their part. Then another member would go in and track over that. But honestly we don't really know how we do it, we just do."
Sometimes going with feeling rather than rules can lead to a wonderful final product.
"I think we just found a better expression of those country influences with the rock influxes mixed in."
Scared Money is the first track off the bands upcoming album do out later this year. Leaning into their roots and exploring everyday ideas will be at the center of the 11 song project. With a new strong sense of identity and plenty of twang to go along with it, Southall is a swift return to the sonics and ideas that make country music country!
