With a strong bluegrass influence and an unmistakable modern appeal, "If I Could" is both autobiographical and universally resonant. Co-written with Lacy Rostyak and produced by Grady Smith alongside Gee herself, the song paints a vivid picture of a life in constant motion—a life defined by the road but yearning for something more stable.

“Writing with someone else is such a cool experience because we were writing Lacy’s story, but I was writing from my experiences,” Gee shares. “We both have different takes on what the song means, and I hope the listener will relate from their own perspective.”

Gee’s evocative lyrics transport listeners into the heart of her journey. The opening lines set the tone for the song’s deeply personal narrative: Don’t mean to be a burden, but I had a real bad day / And I need to talk, after that I’ll be okay. This raw honesty immediately invites listeners into a world of weary travels and unspoken longing. The song then delves into Gee’s upbringing, reflecting on a childhood marked by constant movement: She had me on a Greyhound bus before I was even born / Daddy bought the ticket and sent us on our way. These lines illustrate a life of transience, a theme that continues throughout the track.

The chorus captures the emotional tug-of-war between a restless spirit and the desire for love and stability: I’m getting tired of chasing lines out on the highway / Running blind behind headlights, nowhere to go / You know that I would settle down if you asked me to right now / And stay right here forever if I could. This refrain serves as the heart of the song, echoing the inner conflict of an artist torn between her nomadic lifestyle and the dream of putting down roots.

As the song progresses, Gee shares more of her journey, from sleeping beneath the stars to realizing that her mother, too, had never truly settled down. Mama put it in my head, moving’s in my blood / Mama, she ain’t ever been in love. These lines further cement the generational theme of searching for something just out of reach, making If I Could a deeply layered and emotionally rich piece of storytelling.

This deeply personal track comes at a pivotal moment in Gee’s career. The past year has been a whirlwind for the independent artist, from gracing the cover of Spotify’s Fresh Finds playlist to commanding festival stages at Bonnaroo and C2C in London. With seven singles already released in 2024 and a packed 2025 tour spanning the U.S. and six additional countries, Gee’s momentum is undeniable. If I Could marks yet another milestone in her evolution as an artist who masterfully blends traditional and contemporary country influences.

For fans eager to experience Sheyna Gee’s storytelling magic, If I Could is more than just a song—it’s a moment of raw, heartfelt reflection from an artist poised for greatness. With six more singles and a live EP on the horizon, Gee is proving that she’s not just chasing the highway lines—she’s blazing her own trail in country music.
