Just In: Joe Bonsall of The Oak Ridge Boys Passes Away at 76

The country music world is mourning the loss of Joseph S. Bonsall, a beloved and long-time member of The Oak Ridge Boys, who passed away on July 9, 2024, at the age of 76. Bonsall, who resided in Hendersonville, Tennessee, succumbed to complications related to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Joe Bonsall's tenure with The Oak Ridge Boys spanned an incredible 50 years. As a member of this legendary group, he contributed to their standing as one of America's most cherished country and gospel quartets. The Oak Ridge Boys are celebrated for their harmoniously rich sound and have garnered numerous accolades over their storied career. Their membership in the Grand Ole Opry and inductions into the Philadelphia Music Hall of Fame, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and the prestigious Country Music Hall of Fame stand as testaments to their monumental impact on music.

Bonsall's contributions to the group were significant. He was known not only for his distinctive tenor voice but also for his charismatic stage presence and deep commitment to the group's success. The Oak Ridge Boys produced a plethora of hits, including timeless classics like "Elvira," "Bobbie Sue," and "American Made," which helped solidify their place in music history.

In addition to his musical achievements, Joseph Bonsall was a prolific author, penning 11 books. His latest work, a memoir titled "I See Myself," is set for release in November. Bonsall's passions extended beyond music and writing; he was an avid reader, banjo player, and Philadelphia Phillies fan. He also cherished his time working on the farm.

Joe Bonsall's faith and family were central to his life. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Mary Ann, daughters Jennifer and Sabrina, granddaughter Breanne, grandson Luke, two great-grandsons, Chance and Grey, and his sister Nancy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph S. Bonsall Sr. and Lillie Bonsall.

In accordance with Joe's wishes, there will be no funeral service. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to The ALS Association or to the Vanderbilt Medical Center ALS and Neuroscience Research Center, honoring Bonsall's fight against the disease that ultimately took his life.

Joe Bonsall's legacy with The Oak Ridge Boys and his contributions to country and gospel music will be remembered and celebrated for years to come. His voice and spirit have left an indelible mark on the hearts of fans and fellow musicians alike.
